Pastor Bryan Webster, a member of the Multi Faith Partnership would like Scunthorpe to be twinned with a Palestinian Village in a move to boost the town's spirits.
The idea of twinning Scunthorpe with Al-Walajah has been mooted by local clergyman Bryan Webster and his wife Isobel who have been rebuilding a demolished house in the village. The house is close to the massive separation wall built on the border by Israwl whilse over the years the village itself has been involved in tensions between the two states.
But despite the uncertain future the village faces, Bryan says the community spirit there is vibrant and he wants Scunthorpe people to adopt the same optimistic approach to overcoming its own problems, from unemployment to industrial decline. Bryan, who is also Chairman of the Street Pastor Scheme said "wouldn't it be something if we could tie Scunthorpe to Al-Walajah in some way and follow the people's journey back to freedrom from the wall an on to the creation of a vibrant town. It might encourage our own citizens to take an active creative ownership of Scunthorpe's future. The town twinning is about building up this support of resistance and resilience. Scunthorpe is a town with industry diminishing, so many people are unemployed in the town - how do you keep going when the odds are against you" Bryan went on to say that the people in Al-Walajah faced incredible hardships on a daily basis but were relentless in trying to rebuild their community.
